It was my first time away from home, and I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve had my own bedroom and bathroom ever since I was a kid, so the fundamentals of dorm life were already a culture shock for me, but I was ready. Most JMU students are probably no stranger to Devon Lane. This off-campus neighborhood is a desired spot for many students. Though there are more updated living options elsewhere in Harrisonburg, the energy is high and the people are fun. Many sports, clubs, sororities and both professional and social fraternities facilitate events at members’ off-campus housing.
One of my Gen’ed history professors, for example, made it a requirement to meet with him more than once during the semester. He taught, at minimum, 300 students that semester, but still made a point to get to know each one to the best of his ability. This helpfulness and outreach is much more common than uncommon with teachers, making the learning environment much more pleasant. This school is ideal for students who enjoy having fun but are also extremely dedicated to school work. The dorms range in comfort levels depending on where you are located. In general, the dorms are all comfortable and bathrooms are readily available.
In 1914, the name of the university was changed to the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg. At first, academic offerings included only today’s equivalent of technical training or junior college courses, but authorization to award bachelor’s degrees was granted in 1916. During this initial period of development, the campus plan was established and six buildings were constructed.
When you rate your choices for where you want to live you’ll be rating them by location. The six locations to choose from are Bluestone, Hillside, Village, Lakeside, Skyline, and the Tree Houses. And it’s just like a mass of people that walk into E hall. So you will be standing in line for a long time if you go at that time. So just be aware of that if you don’t really feel like standing in line and you don’t want to wait for your food go either way before that, or a little bit after that. Most college students enter their freshman year excited for a taste of real freedom, but the real freedom comes later, when they move off campus. Harrisonburg offers an abundance of living options, from apartments and townhomes to houses downtown, and each place comes with its own set of perks. The endless options for off-campus living can be overwhelming, but with JMU’s close community and Harrisonburg’s free transportation, you’re not bound to just one area.
Under the federal Fair Housing rules, individuals have a right to have an Emotional Support Animal in their dwelling, even in buildings that prohibit pets. The US Department of Housing has determined that university housing is subject to the same regulations for Emotional Support Animals as other types of homes and apartments. Fair Housing rules and case law affirm that students living in university housing have rights as emotional support animal tuition for university of hawaii at manoa owners, just as they would if they were living in non-university housing. Most first year halls are assigned same-gender floors or sections. First-year students that join JMU in the spring will be required to live on campus only for the spring semester, but are encouraged to consider living on again next year. Like all public universities in Virginia, James Madison is governed by a Board of Visitors appointed by the Governor of Virginia.
The RA is an upper-class student who has the experience to talk with students and the training to make a referral if necessary. Are there computer hookups in the residence hall rooms? Yes, residential students have access to MyResNet wifi throughout their residence hall, including their bedroom. MyResNet access has already been included in your student fees.
There are three planned fire drills in each hall per semester. These are an important part of our safety program. Parents with concerns about their students can call the 24-hour campus emergency number. Campus police will respond to calls with appropriate counseling, and medical or law enforcement assistance.
I used to take them, but walking around JMU really improves the way you feel about it . I can’t think of anything negatives as to why you would want to go anywhere else. I started off with five luck-of-the-draw classes.
But don’t worry, at least you’re close to Newman Lake, which is the place to go for lonely crying sessions. Hoffman is nicknamed “Hotel Hoffman” for a reason. It’s air-conditioned, with suite-style bathroom, wooden floors, and a location that can’t be beaten. Walk out the beautiful front door and you’re right at the Hoffman Hall bus stop. Just a short, 30-second walk will bring you right to the Quad.
