In many cases, the outlet gives you instructions on a silver platter on exactly how to pitch them. This is the case for Business Insider and many others. Your best practice is to look for a contact page or a “Write For Us” page on their website. Here is what the Write For Us page for Business Insider looks like. You may earn a couple of hundred bucks directly from the publisher. However, sometimes the benefits are intangible and not easily calculated.
They’ll browse headlines, find something interesting, and spend a minute or two reading it. Long posts don’t have a place on their site. The key is to leverage your own unique perspective. Bring something to the table that you get from blogging about your subject, from running a business in your industry, or just from your personal experience. They want content that has unique commentary and opinions.
Interesting profile pieces do really well here. If you have a compelling personal story, this may be the place for you.
