Employees earn vacation leave beginning the first day of employment, however, they are not eligible to take leave for 6 months. Accepted recruits will be invited to complete Highway Patrol Basic School and the state’s Field Training and Evaluation Program, upon graduation from which they will become sworn North Carolina Highway Patrol Troopers. Other disqualifiers include having convictions for driving while impaired or intoxicated and pending criminal or traffic charges. Additional prerequisites to becoming a North Carolina Highway Patrol officer include passing reading comprehension and writing tests, a physical fitness test, a background check, and medical and psychological evaluations. Effective July 1, 2022, new officers will receive a base salary of $5,068 to $5,781 per month during training depending on previous law enforcement experience. After six months, the base salary will increase to $5,350 to $5,781 per month depending on experience.
As an added convenience and safety measure, the City requires all new employees to sign up for direct deposit of their payroll checks.
