So, it would be best to forget using any ride-share apps all together while in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately, Uber cannot pick you up at the San Juan airport. Uber is allowed to take you to the airport, but not pick you up. The Taxi Drivers’ Union in Puerto Rico has caused rideshare companies like Uber to be prohibited from picking up passengers at the San Juan airport.

If you don’t want to deal with overpriced taxi’s or renting a car to drive yourself, there are some other ways to get around in Puerto Rico. 🚙 Compared to where we live in Florida, the drivers were actually quite nice but at times traffic rules aren’t always followed like mexican historical sites in the US. People may turn left right in front of you or stop in the middle of the road, barely pulling off to the side. After you’ve shared your ride with someone back home, be sure to follow along in your app so you can pay attention to the route the driver is taking.
All car rentals must use this electronic system and your rental will have an Auto Expresso pass. To use the toll roads known as Auto Express routes, you must add this to your rental ahead of time. Otherwise, you’ll incur huge and expensive fees every time you use the express route.
Nevertheless, since Uber primarily operates in the Metropolitan area and the main cities, renting a car is considered the second best option for transportation on the island. Often, drivers simply take random parking spots along the side of the road. If you plan to stay in San Juan for the rest of your trip, you do not truly require a car to get around.
